The Texas Chain Drive Massacre is a new charity drive event for 2011. This year ALL fees and donations will directly benefit the newly formed Texas High School Mountain Bike League. We are very fortunate to have Jen McRae, winner of the 2011 TD Mayor’s Cup (Boston), as our celebrity spin instructor for our inaugural event!
The Texas High School Mountain Bike League was organized in March 2010 for Texas students in grades 9 to 12 to have a youth development organization which builds high school mountain bike teams across the state. The Texas League is a project league under NICA. (www.nationalmtb.org).
The League’s core values are:
· Inclusive: All student athletes are encouraged to participate. No one is “benched.” 83% of NICA student-athletes surveyed reported that their coach did a “great job” creating a positive, safe and inclusive team environment.
· Equal: All student-athletes are treated equally. Team scores are a combination of male and female points. Nearly 1/4 of NICA student athletes in 2011 were girls.
· Strong Body: Improving fitness and wellness are at the center of NICA training and education. 95% of NICA student athletes reported that their health and physical fitness improved when they joined a NICA League.
· Strong Mind: NICA student-athletes are students first. More than half of NICA’s Student-Athletes have a 3.5 GPA or higher, 85% will go to a 4-year college or university, and 1/3 reported academic improvement when they joined the NICA League.
· Strong Character: NICA programs and leadership teaches student-athletes to work hard, respect others and give back to their teams, communities and the environment. 73% of student athletes reported an increased awareness and respect for the environment.
Regardless of ability level, the Texas League is committed to providing a positive experience for all student-athletes.
From Vance McMurry, Founding Chair, Texas High School Mountain Bike League: “We are focused on providing a culture where high school boys and girls feel safe, grow as a person and experience the excitement of competitive mountain biking.” With this in mind, we applaud the approach of the Texas High School Mountain Bike League, which is open to all Texas high school students.
We can’t think of a more enjoyable way to increase a child’s level of fitness, coordination, confidence or otherwise. But, the Texas League has a need for events, coaches, equipment, and more. These are the reasons we’ve decided to create a charity drive on their behalf. If you are interested in helping the League, please contact Vance McMurry at vance@texasmtb.org.
This year the Texas Chain Drive Massacre will directly benefit the Texas High School Mountain Bike League. In conjunction with Pure Austin, Vagary Events will host a 90 minute spin drive on Saturday, Oct 29th. Space is extremely limited. If there is demand, we will happily add a second class to accommodate additional participants/donors. If required, the second class will immediately follow the first class, at 3pm. The spreadsheet below contains a list of confirmed registrants. We will do our best to ensure that you walk away with more than just a great workout. It’ll be fun. It’ll be challenging. We are working with area sponsors to ensure that our participants are rewarded for their generous contribution.
You can register by Donating directly to the Texas High School Mountain Bike League PayPal account. We are asking for a $40 minimum donation to reserve a “bike.” On the day of the event you can also donate any old cycling equipment you might have laying around the house. Receipts will be provided if requested.
We hope to see you there!
1. Your Donation is your preregistration.
2. Minimum $40 donation.
3. Or you can contact Will Ross or Gilbert Ramirez directly to preregister.
Online registration is now closed, but you can still register prior to the event, between 1pm and 1:30pm, at the Pure Austin Downtown spin studio. First come, first served!
